ALLGOOD,  Judson J., Respected attorney; Covington, KY –Judson J. “Jud” Allgood, a longtime senior partner with the law firm Peck, Shaffer & Williams, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) after a brief illness.  The resident of Ryland Lakes Country Club in Covington was 74.  Born in Findlay, Ohio, Mr. Allgood moved to Cincinnati in 1948.  Because of accelerated-study programs during World War II, he graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s of science in chemistry at age 18.  He worked for a brief period at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY., and then was inducted into the Navy.  After the war he returned to Harvard Law School, where he was on the Law Review.  Though he took the bar exam at age 20, he had to wait until he was 21 to find out the results.  His first position practicing law was as a patent attorney at what is now Wood, Herron & Evans.  He later joined Peck, Shaffer & Williams as a bond attorney, where he spent the following 48 years.  When he joined Peck, Shaffer & Williams in 1952, friends say he found his true calling as a public finance lawyer.  “Jud Allgood was a specialist in the law of public finance,” said John Fischer, managing partner of the firm.  “Jud had a wry sense of humor and was an excellent and patient teacher for many young attorneys, but his crowning achievement was the legal structuring of Hamilton County’s financing of Riverfront Stadium.”  Mr. Allgood successfully defended the county against a taxpayers’ suit concerning Riverfront Stadium financing that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.  “He had an amazing ability to analyze and simplify very complex issues,” Mr. Fischer said.  Although retired from active practice as a partner, Mr. Allgood continued to serve as a valued counselor and adviser to partners and associates of the law firm until a few weeks before his death.  “He was one of the premier experts on Ohio public finance law, serving as an incredibly valuable resource on issues ranging from home rule to political subdivision debt,” said John Weld Peck, Mr. Allgood’s partner for more than 20 years.  Family members say Mr. Allgood also had a keen interest in spectator sports, especially baseball, maintaining a devotion to the Detroit Tigers.  He also regularly played bridge for many years with a group at the University Club, where he lived when he first arrived in Cincinnati and where he remained a member for some 50 years.  Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Carol; two sons, Judson M. “Jay” Allgood and Charles H. Allgood, both of Mount Washington; two daughters, Gwendolyn Triplett of Hyde Park and Brooks Armandroff of Alexandria, VA.; and one grandchild.  Funeral will be at 2 PM Friday at Knox Presbyterian Church, Hyde Park.  There will be no visitation.  Burial will be at 10 AM Saturday at Spring Grove Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Mercantile Library, 414 Walnut St., Cincinnati, OH 45202; Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45208; Pleasant Grove Methodist Church, 10283 DeCoursey Pike, Covington, KY 41015; or the charity of the donor’s choice.  Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is in charge of arrangements.
